If you fire an object at 1669 km/h ….

Random thought, not related to IM…

Anyway, the thought:

Since the earth rotates on its axis at approximately ~1669 km/h (by the equator at least)…

…if you stand by the equator, and fire an object at approx- 1669 km/h in the direction that is OPPOSITE to the earth’s rotational direction…

…would that mean that the object does not actually move forward, but it actually stands STILL in mid air while the earth rotates against it?

Seems logical, right?

It’s these kind of thoughts that eventually will drive you insane, lol.
And if you’re confused about why I put this on LDC- well it IS my personal blog too, so I can put whatever I want here. If you don’t like it that’s not really my problem now is it?

Just a random thought that occured to me over supper today.

Comments?

Hmm, Interesting thought.
Its a bit ike the water down the plug hole trick.
If you stand one side of the equator (ie 5 metres uphill of the sign in your post) then the water will always drain anticlockwise……………if you stand 5 metres downhill then the water will always flow clockwise.
Some weird stuff going on there methinks

Hmm, that’s interesting… I think they investigated this on brainiac like last year, can’t remember the result of it though.

Thanks for commenting though :)

I think this is about dynamics. But your idea is really interesting.. You could try to implement this in make money sphere.

Your object moves at 1669 km/h *relative to your standpoint* (and relative to anything that is unfortunate enough to stand in its way, otherwise gun manufacturers would be out of business).

The fact that you’re moving relative to a different origin yourself isn’t relevant.

I’ll give you a better one: if you sit in a spaceship that travels @ 1/2 of the speed of light and switch on the headlights – how fast will *their* light be then? ;)

Btw, I really enjoyed your reinvention of the wheel.

Joe is correct..er…mostly! I also wanted to comment tho as well on your linkwheel my friend. I had seen another report, and have implemented it successfully, on bhw a couple months back. Your link strategy though was/is slightly different and has also given me some additional link geometry/strategies I want to try in a spin off of of this methodolgy. Nice work Lemonarian. Will watch with anticpation the P100 project. ;)

I know this is an old post, but I just found your blog and wanted to pop in and say hey.

The gun and bullet are moving with the earth at that speed. If you were out in space you could make it geosynchronous, but you cant do it on earth.

It’s like throwing a ball inside a moving car. It’ll go any direction you throw it, at whatever speed you throw it, but if you drop it out the window: WHOOSH! away it goes.

:)
