Screw Income Goals – Why You Won’t Be Successful Online

by lemonarian on July 10, 2009 · 29 comments

in Success, Philosophical, Goal Setting etc

I’m guilty of it too… Setting an income goal.

For the past several months, I have been focused on making $xxx per day.

Everyone tells you to set CLEAR goals, right?

It’s goal setting 101 – be clear and specific.

So an income goal seems to be very clear, right?

“Make $300 per day” or a more specific example “make $100 per day on autopilot in my clickbank account”.

Or something like that.

Seems clear enough right?

That’s what I’ve done up until… right about since the beginning of this month really.

It’s like a lightswitch went off in my head…

I’ve realized that income goals are TOO FUZZY. They may seem to ve perfectly clear and specific on the surface, but really they are the opposite.

You say “I want to make $100 a day”… your subconscious mind (the part of your brain responsible for bringing your goals into reality) instantly fires back… “Why?”

You want money? Heck, it’s just paper or some numbers on a screen.

Realize this: Your subconscious mind is not a logically thinking creature.

In other words:

Your subconscious mind sees no practicality in making this money, and therefore gives this goal no attention.

But you say “But once I have this money I’ll be able to do this, this and this! I’ll be so happy!”

Yeah, good luck telling your subconscious that.

Here’s what happened for me.

I’m 15 now. Since about mid-June, I decided I wanted a moped. This one to be specific.

Without realizing it… it became the focus of my subconsious mind. A real goal. Something tangible. Now my subconscious could easily see the benefits of acquiring this. Easy transportation, getting to school in 5 mins, not having to wait for the bus, freedom, fun.

Now after setting a CONCRETE SOLID TANGIBLE goal… what’s the difference?

Well, in the last few days alone:

Affiliate sales:

aff earnings

Flipped a website for the first time ever:

And on top of that, I just WON $1500 in Howie’s JV Cash Competition for IM Remarkable. This is from the recent email sent out to JV partners.

IMRemarkableCompetition

Yep… all this from a simple shift in thinking. This is more than enough to afford that moped, and I’m most likely picking it up next week.

That’s over $6k in a few days.

Now I’m not telling you this to brag, not at all. But merely to demonstrate the difference made from a simple shift in the way I set my goals.

Hope you got something out of this.

Cheers,

Linus

I think you hit it right smack on the nose. If a person can take a vague goal and turn it into something concrete and tangible, they can increase their focus and motivation.

Wow, 6 grand at 15. Way to go! I haven’t hit that, yet, at 42. :-(

Nice post Linus and congratulations on your recent success.

One of the problems with setting goals is that often the means of achieving them are not totally in your control. Let’s say you set a goal of $100 a day average – you may miss your target because your server goes down or someone else bids higher on ppc so you don’t get any clickthroughs. Most people would tell themselves – “Well that was beyond my control so it’s OK” – the problem is, one can always find something beyond one’s control. So the goal becomes pointless.

Most of the gurus who write about goals are the ones who succeeded. The problem is, there are also lots of people who set goals who failed – they just don’t tell you.

So is it the goal-setting that made the difference or simply that that is what successful people tend to do. On the other hand, when you read the biographies of many successful entrepreneurs, they had little idea of what they wanted to achieve, they were just good at seizing opportunities. Their goals were vague at best.

Sorry for such a long comment – last point. Perhaps rather than focusing on what we want to achieve (goals), we should focus on what makes them happen – eg 10 articles a week, 3 lenses etc – hit these targets and the rest should happen. And to retain your focus, have a clear vision of what success will mean (a moped).

Just my thoughts!

Top post Linus.

Success coach Brian Tracy (amongst others) drill home the importance of asking ‘why’ for each of your goals.

I too had a financial goal to make £XXXXXXX by X date. But when I asked the most simple of questions: “Why?” and came up with 17+ reasons it made it all the more worthwhile.

Best,

Sam.

Interesting that you figured this out on your own. You should get your hands on the book Psycho-cybernetics by Matthew Maltz – it’s right along the same thoughts as you have had. It’s an old book but valuable.

It’s by Maxwell Maltz actually. I’ve been studying this *mind stuff* since I was 9… read most of these classics. I actually had a blog (my first blog) about self improvement etc but that one died, though I got interviewed on a teleseminar and stuff through it, pretty cool.

Even though I’ve read it time and time again, it really didn’t click with me until I discovered it by accident.

I think it’s like that for a lot of people… they read about it, but it doesn’t work for them until they discover the same concepts by accident.

Thanks for your comment :)

Linus as far as you wisdom is concern you don’t sound like a 15 year old kid. You had came a long way in IM.

Linus:

You are truly an inspiration! When I joined your list to download the Link Wheel report, I had no idea you were only 15 years old – the information was impressive overall, but to come from someone of your tender years – Wow!
I told my 16 year old daughter about you making 6k – which impressed her, but when I had to correct her to tell her that that was within only 1 month – her eyes got really big and she was speechless!
Keep up the great work and congratulations on your achievements – now maybe I can convince my daughter that how you think truly does help you achieve your goals (I’ve been trying to tell her that for years, but she thinks I’m a little crazy).
Thanks so much for sharing your insight!

Hey, thanks, appreciate the comment. Now maybe you can get your daughter interested in this stuff and you can joint venture with her!

We need more entrepreneurs you know, haha.

Thanks,
Linus

Congrats Linus!

Yup, i was thinking of using this item as well since it’s most powerful instead of writing like you mention earlier ’100 per day’

It’s even great if you can save it into desktop screen and see it everytime you use your com! push you to work even ‘Smarter’ and ‘Harder’ to your goal.

Cheers!

So what exactly goes into flipping a website? Few questions regarding..

What was the sites starting point?
What exactly did you do to the site to “flip it”?
How long did it take ya’?

Thanks
Nick

Hey Nick.

Man, I don’t know… I just took an old site that was making some money and I sold it. Simple!

I didn’t build it with the intention of flipping it in the first place, so none of your questions apply…

Better yet, let your mind figure out how to do it – with some help. The same ‘forces’ that can help things materialize the clearer you visualize them, can also be ‘helped along’ by training your mind on the “how”.

Don’t just make it a clearer goal, but give it legs. How about “what activities, etc. will help me make $100 per day on autopilot in my clickbank account”!

Your concept is good but that’s exactly what I told you NOT to do. Having a goal of say “$100 per day on autopilot in my clickbank account” – is too fuzzy. Well I don’t know if it works for other people, but income goals just don’t work for me.

Your post really hit me, cause i did what you did. Setting a goal, like $10000/month. I got this lessons from “The Secret”. Now i know how to complete the goal, so i can make it true.
I know you from BHW, actually i just read all of the “Linkwheels” subject in BHW.
Thank You so much.

Yes, I’ve heard others say that your goal should not be an actual dollar amount.
I think you have something – concrete – tangible – that should be the way to go with goal setting..

Wow… You are a pretty smart guy for your age. What you stated is so true. I would also like to point out that once you do make a tangible goal to make money to buy a moped it actually help to also think of ways to achieve the goal like Create more backlinks to your site or to write more article posts for your blog. I believe having steps to achieve your goal also help.

Its true that setting up a goal in writing will be in our subconscious mind for a pretty long time, till we able to accomplish it. I was amazed to know that at the age of just 15 you have clear cut plans of your business and life. Keep going. All the best for all your ventures.
